WISE Healthy and Fit
Beginning the 2007/2008 school year WISE Charter School, Northpoint Health and Wellness Center and the University of Minnesota created a partnership to improve the food environment at WISE. Together we created the WISE Kids Nurtition Council with students, staff and parents to generate and implement ideas to make the food at WISE healthier.
Strategies and steps we are taking to improve student health…
- A cooking club for both students and families
- All encompassing focus on exercise and activity
- Initiation of WISE Kids Nutrition Council
- Ensure that vegetable and fruit choices are more readily available
- Home-make foods instead of ordering processed foods for meals
- Use activity based, healthy and/or non-food incentives in place of typical ice cream or pizza rewards
- Set guidelines for birthday treats requiring healthier options instead of cupcakes, cake, etc…
- Incorporate healthy eating and physical activty into school curriculum
